Want to sell your same-sex marriage vote? Think again

THINKING of selling your same sex postal plebiscite vote for some cool cash?

You might want to rethink that one.

A Geelong man is risking a $2100 fine and 12 months in jail for attempting to sell his same sex marriage vote for just $50.

Ryan Mills listed his Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey form on Geelong Online Sales Facebook group for $50 over the weekend.

Mr Mills, who lists his hometown as Geelong, also posted an image of a survey form on his personal Facebook page with the caption, "Selling my vote $50".

The Geelong Advertiser was unable to get into contact with Mr Mills on Wednesday to discuss the sale, or confirm it was a genuine offer.

If the sale does go ahead, Mr Mills could be facing heavy criminal penalties

"The sale and/or purchase of survey materials or responses may be an offence under the Census and Statistics Act 1905 or the Commonwealth Criminal Code," Australian Bureau of Statistics spokesman Jonathan Palmer said.

"An offence under the Census and Statistics Act 1905 carries a maximum penalty of $2,100. An offence under the Commonwealth Criminal Code carries a maximum penalty of 12 months imprisonment.

"The ABS, in partnership with several online marketplaces (including eBay, Facebook, Amazon, Alibaba, Gumtree), has confirmed listing survey materials or responses for sale does not comply with their policies and these listings will be blocked and removed."

Mr Mills' post on Geelong Online Sales could not be found yesterday, suggesting it had been taken down.

Mr Mills won't be the first
