Wanless wins the duel

FORMER Australian champion Todd Wanless took out the AZA Motel Sprintcar Gold Cup from Sam Walsh and James Thompson at Lismore Speedway on Sunday afternoon.

The 35-lap feature resulted in an exciting battle between Wanless and Walsh.

Walsh dominated the first half of the race before Wanless pressed his claim for victory.

He hit the front just after the half-way point, but Walsh wrenched back the lead.

It was an exciting battle as the lead changed hands before Wanless ultimately gained the edge when Walsh’s sprintcar developed problems with a sticking accelerator.

He drove a strong race and maintained second position to the chequered flag.

Thompson always had third place secure late in the event.

Defending Gold Cup champion Ian Loudoun finished fourth.

Loudoun was the top qualifier and drew an eight inversion for the main event.

The final car count was disappointing after withdrawals reduced the 27 entries to 19.

Other main event winners on Sunday were Warren King (wingless sprints), Kevin Willis (four-cylinder sedans), Lewis Gamble (street stocks) and Will Butler (AMCAs).
