Waiting taking shine off Splendour

PRESSURE is mounting on organisers to secure a venue for next year's Splendour in the Grass festival as the wait for a decision on whether they can return to Byron drags on.

The festival has been held at Woodford for the past two years, but promoters have always hoped the 2012 event would return to Byron.

The application to stage the event at Yelgun has now been in the hands of the NSW Department of Planning for more than a year, much longer than organisers originally anticipated.

At the time of their submission, general manager of the proposed Yelgun site known as North Byron Park- lands, Mat Moris, told media he believed a response would be received within a few months.

The application is to hold Splendour in the Grass at the site once a year, as well as up to three other major events, with a total of up to 10 event days per year.

A spokesperson for Splendour in the Grass yesterday agreed that time was running out, but refused to comment on whether the event would return to Woodford in 2012.

Mr Morris said the Department of Planning had advised Splendour organisers a decision was "pending", and a spokeswoman for the department told The Northern Star it would be announcing its recommendations "shortly".

Asked why it had taken so long, the spokeswoman said there were a number of key issues within the application, including flooding, emergency evacuation and traffic management, which required detailed consideration.

Mr Morris welcomed a report to this week's Byron Council meeting recommending council's proposed major event clause be scrapped.
