Sailing Championships await the wind at Ballina
GOOD waves and light winds have greeted competitors in the Australian Wave Sailing National Championships at Ballina this week.
More than 40 sailors have converged on the beach for the week-long event at Flat Rock.
There was junior competition and an expression session on Monday.
Official competition in open men's and masters divisions is likely to start tomorrow.
There is also an amateur and women's section with Ballina's Paul Bellamy among the favourites in the masters division.
"The open and masters guys take it very seriously," contest director Martin Batstone said. "There is a world tour event in Maui (Hawaii) that is just finishing and some of these guys are coming back or aspiring to get to that level.
"We're lucky to have a big window to complete the competition."
Most of the competitors are from NSW and Queensland with the best conditions expected for Friday before the final day of competition on Saturday.
Spectators are welcome on the beach at anytime during the competition.
The event has been sponsored by North Coast Holiday Parks, Fishy Fishy, Lennox Hotel and Northern Rivers Oral and Maxillo Facial Surgery.
