Wage rise for low-paid workers

THE Northern Rivers’ lowest-paid workers will get an extra $19.40 per week from July 1 after Fair Work Australia yesterday announced an increase in the minimum wage.

Federal Families Minister Jenny Macklin was quick to seize on the announcement to say the increase would flow through to the 28,000 people on the Government’s new paid parental leave scheme, increasing their wage from $570 to $589.40 per week.

In its announcement, Fair Work Australia said the default casual loading for award/agreement free employees had also been increased from 21% to 22%.

The standard casual loading in modern awards of 25% remained unchanged.

Businesses that fail to pass on the increase risk fines of up to $33,000 per breach.
