Vote for our gal as ‘immortal’

WHAT girl wouldn't be excited about the chance of being immortalised in wax and displayed in a museum?

It could happen for our golden girl, Skennars Head swimmer Jacqueline Freney, who is one of six sporting stars in the running to be included at Madame Tussauds in Sydney.

But first we've got to vote for her, and we've only two days to do it.

For the first time, the public will decide which athlete should join celebrities such as Rod Laver, Cathy Freeman and Ian Thorpe at the wax museum.

Freney, 20, is up against Wally Lewis, Lauren Jackson, John Eales, Mick Fanning (also originally from Ballina) and Glenn McGrath. She was not only the most successful athlete of the London Paralympic Games but became the most successful Australian at a single Games, winning eight gold from eight events.

Since then she has been named Paralympian of the Year and Female Athlete of the Year, picked up three gongs at the NSW Institute of Sport's annual awards night and received the Prime Minister's Women In Sport award. "I am very flattered and excited to be recognised as an Australian sporting hero that could be immortalised in wax at Madame Tussauds Sydney," Freney said. "It would be an absolute honour to be chosen and to have my figure standing alongside some of the sporting greats already in the attraction."

Voting closes on Friday and the winner will be announced early February.

  • 250: The number of measurements the Madame Tussauds team will take of the successful athlete.
  • 60: The number of artists and sculptors who will work on the figure.
  • 800: The number of hours it will take to create the wax figure.
