Vixens out fox Firebirds

THE Queensland Firebirds didn't lose a game on the way to winning last year's trans-Tasman netball premiership.

Now they cannot seem to win one.

The Queenslanders slumped to their fourth loss in five games after a heartbreaking 52-51 defeat at the hands of the high-flying Melbourne Vixens in Melbourne yesterday afternoon.

After leading at every break, the Firebirds, who also led by eight goals at one stage in the final quarter, were just three seconds away from a much-needed victory when Karyn Howarth scored the winning goal for the hosts to complete the double over the visitors after winning the round one clash in Brisbane.

Star shooter Romelda Aiken scored 33 goals from 36 attempts and goal attack Natalie Medhurst 18 from 23 to give the defending champions a great shot at winning.

Tegan Caldwell top-scored with 27 from 33 to help the Vixens remain undefeated and on top of the ladder.

The Adelaide Thundercats beat the West Coast Fever 48-36 in Perth in the other game played yesterday afternoon.
