Villa stun Stars to reach semis

ALSTONVILLE sprung a major surprise by upsetting Italo Stars 1-0 at Crawford Park on Wednesday night, catapulting them into the semi-finals of Football FNC’s Tursa Anzac Cup soccer.

Constant rain and greasy conditions made things difficult for both sides.

But Villa’s enthusiastic young squad played with good structure and eventually they got the better of their more experienced North Lismore opponents.

The only goal came midway through the first half, with livewire flanker Sean Spencer blasting an acutely angled near post shot into the roofof the net.

Villa will now meet Goonellabah in a semi-final on Tuesday, April 13, with the other to be contested by Cup holders Richmond Rovers and Byron Bay.

Byron Bay got through on the toss of a coin over an unlucky Ballina after the two sides tied on top of their pool and couldn’t be separated on goal difference.
