Vidler leads way

QUEENSLAND under-23 and Norths As lead-off hitter, Matt Vidler, hit his straps early into the 2010 Rex Airlines Far North Coast Baseball League, blasting three hits in an 8-2 win over Lismore Workers in Lismore on Saturday.

Vidler demonstrated patience and power to get on base five times for Norths, picking up two walks, a single, a double and a triple in a solid afternoon of baseball.

Norths were always in control over the tri-colours, slipping away to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first and scooting away with seven unanswered runs by the time the game reached the top of the fourth.

As starter Paul Simes gave up two hits early in the first but steadily sliced his way through the Workers’ line-up across the next six innings, gathering six strikeouts while only conceding a single walk to his opponents, and just two runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Workers struggled for momentum throughout the game, with the exception of the sixth innings when Daniel Clark, Trent Clark and Wayne Devlin went back-to-back singles to bring home their only runs of the game.

Clint McCarthy joined Vidler on three hits for the afternoon, while Ahren Baxter and Daniel Muggleton each grabbed two of their own.

Super veteran Wayne Devlin, and Dallas Knapp, were the only players to grab multiple hits for Workers.
