VIDEO: Fantastic Beasts set in world before Harry Potter

SEVEN decades before Harry Potter went to Hogwarts, Newt Scamander went to New York.

Now the Muggle world is being given its first big-screen look at the secret life of wizards and witches in the United States.

The book -- which was written to benefit the Comic Relief charity -- is not officially a prequel or sequel to Harry Potter, although its main characters do exist in the same universe.

In the Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban film, there is a nod to Newt Scamander: his name appears on the Marauder's Map.

Inside the Potter universe, the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them book was published in 1927, going on to become not just a bestseller but also a textbook for wizarding students at Hogwarts.

In America, wizarding students go to Ilvermorny instead of Hogwarts. So far it's unclear if that detail will make it into the film.

The film is expected to screen from November 18.
