A SERVING Victorian police officer has faced the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday on a charge of murder.

Leading Senior Constable Timothy Howard Baker, 46, made a brief appearance in court and was remanded in custody after being charged with the shooting death of Vlado Micetic, 44, in the Melbourne suburb of Windsor on August 25, 2013.

Mr Micetic, who had a long criminal history, was shot three times after being pulled over for a routine traffic stop.

Defence lawyer Tony Hargreaves told the court there were concerns about his client's safety while in custody. He said his client was also suffering from mental health issues.

Victoria Police said in a statement: "The charges have been laid following a lengthy and thorough investigation by the Homicide Squad, which was oversighted by Professional Standards Command."

Video from the onboard camera in the police car and CCTV from nearby buildings was reviewed during the investigation.
