BASHING victim Joshua O'Neill says he could have died in a Mooloolaba street after being struck in the head with a metal bar.
The 19-year-old, his girlfriend Joanna Morrison and their friend Aiden Vella, both 17, have been left traumatised by a violent robbery in Goonawarra St on Wednesday night.
Miss Morrison's handbag was stolen and Mr Vella bashed with a glass bottle by two men who had jumped from a car that pulled alongside them as they walked home from McDonalds about 11pm.
"He stopped the car (then) he jumped out with a tyre iron and the other guy had a glass bottle," Mr O'Neill said.
He said the guy with the bottle hit Mr Vella in the head but the glass did not break.
"One was holding my girlfriend and threatening to smash her with a tyre iron if she didn't give him her phone."
He said three girls jumped from the car and were approaching his girlfriend when she relinquished her bag, containing her phone, camera and other items.
Mr O'Neill said the men then set upon him.
"I missed the first punch from his mate but the iron bar got me.
"As soon as he hit me I had the left side of my face covered in blood."
He said he screamed in his attacker's face after being hit and the men got back in the car and drove away.
The shocked trio struggled to get the attention of passers-by and walked to the Mooloolaba police beat where a member of the public raised the alarm.
Mr O'Neill had three stitches inserted to his head at Nambour Hospital.
He was today struggling to comprehend the attack.
Maroochydore Criminal Investigation Branch officers have since recovered a stolen car of interest to them in the investigation.
They were yesterday searching for the assailants.
They were also investigating possible links to other crimes.
