Veterans have a mixed day as careers finish

RETIRING stars Ben Rutten and Lenny Hayes (pictured) had mixed fortunes as both finished off their careers at Adelaide Oval.

Rutten kicked a goal in his side's 2.9 (141) to 9.8 (62) but was also reported for an elbow on Adam Schneider in the first quarter.

Hayes went out a loser in his final game as the Saints won the wooden spoon but had 21 possessions and also broke the AFL record for tackles.

The veteran needed eight tackles to edge past former Sydney Swan Jude Bolton and ended up with 13 to finish on a career tally of 1496, six more than Bolton.

Meanwhile, Greater Western Sydney finished on a high with a thrilling six-point win over the Western Bulldogs in the final home-and-away game of the season

The Giants gave up a 33-point lead in the second quarter only to regroup in the final term to seal an incredible 18.7 (115) to 15.19 (109) victory.

With the scores tied, the winning goal was kicked by Devon Smith with 15 seconds remaining.
