US fires warning at Iranian vessels

THE US Navy fired warning shots at four Iranian fast-attack vessels that were closing on a destroyer at high speed near the Strait of Hormuz, according to US defence officials. The USS Mahan fired the shots on Sunday but they were not reported publicly. The incident, uncovered by Reuters, comes as US President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take office on Friday week. In September, he vowed any Iranian vessels harassing the US Navy in the Arabian Gulf would be "shot out of the water”. Years of sparring eased last year when the US lifted sanctions on Iran after a deal on Iran's nuclear intentions. But there are serious differences still over Iran's missile program and role in conflicts in Syria and Iraq.
