Urunga hwy protest postponed

THIS morning's Pacific Highway protest at Urunga has been postponed due to flooding.

The Doctors for a Safe Pacific Highway were to have joined locals in the town in a symbolic rally and walk over the Pacific Highway bridge at 10am.

The event was aimed to rally the State and Federal Governments to commit greater funding to the Pacific Highway upgrades in 2012.

Richie Williamson of the Pacific Highway Taskforce said flooding around the region has left organisers with no choice but to rescheduled the rally to a later date.

"It's unfortunate, totally unforeseen circumstances, but we don't want to endanger any residents in the Bellinger Valley who may want to attend the rally at Urunga and find themselves at risk of being cut off by floodwaters," Mr Williamson said.

News of the rally was followed last week by a federal and state government commitment to fast track the upgrade of the Nambucca Heads to Urunga section.

A revised date for the rally will be announced in coming days.
