Under 18 girls action augurs well for future

WARWICK women's hockey looks to have a bright future going on the great effort of the under-18 side to keep Brisbane 2 scoreless in one game in the Southern Cross Carnival.

Every sport looks to its juniors to talk about its future and in less than a fortnight, Michelle Eastwell and Melissa Schnitzerling formed an U18 team which defended well in five of its six games at Buderim at the weekend.

"It was a fantastic effort with players as young as 14 in an under-18 competition; all the girls put in a great performance under hot conditions on Sunday at Buderim," Eastwell said. "Hayley Millard and McKenzie Wenmoth played centre half and fullback and were solid in defence for Warwick.

"McKenzie has done well in her first season in Warwick after playing as a junior in New Zealand."

The best performance was a 0-all draw with Brisbane 2.

Warwick also drew 0-all with Redlands. It lost 1-0 to Redlands in the second game between the two sides and went down 3-0 and 1-0, to Brisbane 3.

The first five Warwick games were played on grass and the last on turf, a 6-0 loss to Brisbane 2.
