Local musician helps 5-year-old busk for charity

BUSKING on the streets of Byron Bay is common enough, but two five-year-olds, busking with their teacher, is a little more unusual.

On the day this happy photograph was taken Aliyah Bin Hadher and Tahmina Barikzai were playing ukulele, singing and raising money for Nepal.

"I love playing the ukulele because it's fun," Tahmina said. And at the moment we are learning This Girl is on Fire.

"That's my favourite," Aliyah said.

They are both students of Ilona Harker, a musician, who sings and write her own songs and has performed at Falls Festival and Bluesfest.

Ms Harker said she had couple of different classes with students, and what I am trying to do is to "reclaim the streets of Byron for young people".

"When you feel you can sing in public, it often gives you a huge boost of confidence," she said.

"One of the greatest things that ever happened to me was getting over my shyness through music.

"I just want to help younger people feel that they are allowed to play music and that they have the capacity to do it and are just naturally gifted anyway."

The students practice one week in a class environment and the second week they are in the street of Byron basking.

The older students choose a charity to give the money to. They have raised money for Beyond Blue, Sea Shepherd, The Women's Resource Service in Mullumbimby.
