Wright pipped as Steph Gilmore claims world surfing crown

UPDATE 12.20pm: Lennox Head surfer Tyler Wright has finished runner-up on the World Championship Tour for the second consecutive year.

Stephanie Gilmore claimed her sixth world surfing crown today with a fifth place finish at the Maui Pro in Hawaii enough for he to take top honours.

Wright made the final and finished runner up after she was beaten by Hawaiian Carissa Moore

If she won the final it would have forced a surf-off against Gilmore to see who would be crowned world champion.

LENNOX Head surfer Tyler Wright has advanced to the quarter-finals of the Maui Pro in Hawaii.

She registered a 15.27 (out of a possible 20) to beat Dimity Stoyle and Lakey Peterson in the third round yesterday.

Earlier, Wright registered the highest heat total of the competition with an 18.90 to ease past the first round.
