Tyler a candidate for Surfer of the Year

TYLER Wright is in contention for one of the country's top surfing accolades.

Lennox Head-based Wright is one of three nominations for this year's Australian Female Surfer of the Year title.

Wright, who has built a reputation as one of the country's best female competitors, will battle Sally Fitzgibbons and Stephanie Gilmore for the sought-after title.

The 18-year-old will line up alongside some of the country's best surfers at the event.

The title is among accolades to be handed out at the ceremony in Sydney next Wednesday.

It promises to be a memorable night for Gilmore, who will also be inducted into the Australian Surfing Hall of Fame.

The honour is the latest step in the successful career of the Tweed Heads-based five-times world champion.

"This is such an honour," the 25-year-old said.

"I always feel like these awards are premature for myself, because I am nowhere near retiring, but it is very flattering.

"I love that my achievements in surfing are being recognised on a larger scale."

The awards will help hon-our the 50th anniversary of the organisation.
