Two-year-old girl killed in Bruxner Highway crash

A YOUNG child was killed in a serious two-car crash on the Bruxner Highway near Irvington Wharf Rd, east of Casino yesterday when a car split in two.

A police media spokeswoman said a 2-year-old girl was killed in the crash about 1.20pm.

Paramedics, police, Casino Volunteer Rescue Association and NSW Fire and Rescue responded to the incident.

When they arrived paramedics found the driver of one car, a man in his 60's suffering minor injuries, and the 18-year-old woman driving the other vehicle suffering serious injuries.

The 18-year-old woman had three girls in the car, the two-year-old who was killed, a four-year-old girl who suffered critical injuries and an eight-year-old girl who suffered minor injuries.

A Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter spokesman said the 18-year-old driver was airlifted to Lismore Base Hospital in a serious condition and the four-year-old girl was airlifted to Lady Cilento Children's Hospital in Brisbane in a critical condition.

The man in his 60's was taken to Lismore Base Hospital for observation.

The crash was the first in NSW since Operation Arrive Alive was launched on Friday morning.

"It's an absolute tragedy that someone so young has been lost today," said Traffic and Highway Commander, Acting Assistant Commissioner John Hartley.

"With the increase of traffic on the road over the holiday period I am appealing to road users to drive safely and be vigilant when travelling," he said.

Eastbound motorists travelling towards Lismore were diverted via East Street, Spring Grove Road and Caniaba Road.

Westbound motorists travelling from Lismore were diverted into Caniaba Road, then into Spring Grove Road and East Street to Casino.

The diversions were not suitable for B-Doubles, which were forced to park at Casino and Lismore.

The highway remained closed for some time while officers from the North Coast Crash Investigation Unit investigated the scene.
