A MAN and a woman have died from a crash on the New England Highway about 1km south of Tenterfield about 10.15am.

The collision occurred between a Holden Barina heading south and a Honda Jazz sedan travelling north.

The Barina driver, a 56-year-old North Coast man, died at the scene. His front-seat passenger, a 55-year-old North Coast woman, was treated at the scene and flown to the Gold Coast Hospital by helicopter in a serious condition.

The Honda driver, a 68-year-old woman from the New England Region, was treated at the scene and taken to Tenterfield Hospital, where she later died.
