Man dies after crash

UPDATE, March 28, 10.15 am: ONE of two people injured in a crash on the Pacific Highway south of New Italy yesterday remains in a critical condition at the Gold Coast Hospital, police have said.
The man, aged in his 60s, was flown directly to the Gold Coast by the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter after being trapped in his car after a collision between the car and a truck about 12.10pm yesterday.
A woman in the car, also in her 60s, was also trapped for a period and was eventually taken by road ambulance to hospital.
The crash blocked the highway for hours, forcing motorists to wait or detour via the Summerland Way and Bruxner Highway from Grafton and Ballina.
UPDATE: March 27, 2pm: TRAFFIC on the Pacific Highway is being diverted along the Summerland Way due to the crash.
Diversions are in place at Grafton and Ballina.
The Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter is airlifting the driver of the car to Gold Coast Hospital.
The Traffic Management Centre is advising motorists to prepare for delays of about an hour.
UPDATE 1.40pm: THE driver of the car involved in the smash has been freed after being trapped in the wreckage for more than an hour.
A Rural Fire Service spokesman said both patients will be taken to hospital, the woman by ambulance and the man by the Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter.
Emergency services are still on the scene cleaning up a small diesel spill from the truck.
Police have taken the truck driver to Lismore Base hospital for blood and urine tests.
The Pacific Highway remains blocked in both directions and traffic is banked back north and south of the scene. ***
1.15pm: EMERGENCY services are on the scene of a crash involving a truck and a car on the Pacific Highway at Tabbimoble that has blocked the highway in both directions.
An ambulance media spokeswoman said paramedics were called to the scene at 12.10pm after a triple-0 call reported two people were trapped in the car.
The spokeswoman said when paramedics arrived a woman believed to be in her 60's who was initially trapped had been freed but her husband, also believed to be in his 60's was trapped in the car.
The highway is blocked near Glencoe Forest Rd, south of New Italy.
Police and Rural Fire Service units are on the scene and the Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter has been tasked to the crash to transport any patients to hospital.
