Two gold awards for our Kings of printing

KEEPING up to date, ensuring a high quality of work, speedy turnarounds and environmental awareness have earned industry recognition for a small business at Ballina.

Coaster Kings, based in the North Ballina industrial estate, picked up two gold awards in the Printing Industry Craftsmanship Awards in Sydney.

The awards were for innovative business practices and for environmental initiatives for operations with fewer than 20 employees.

Creative director Rikki-Lee said Coaster Kings was a family business that looked to diversify in line with the skills of its staff.

"We have a sister company called Solprom Advertising and Marketing and all staff work across both businesses," Mrs Lee said.

"Phil Calnan started Coaster Kings and the family has worked together for over 10 years.

"His three sons are now also directors."

Coaster Kings has a new base in Piper Dr which also includes a graphic design studio and a sound studio for Solprom's production of TV and radio advertising.

It enables the business to provide a range of services including logo design, business cards, brochures, flyers, postcards, newsletters, CD marketing, photography, newspaper ads and retail signage.

"The staff are able to diversify across both businesses," Mrs Lee said.

"To be in the running for the environmental award we needed to be a Sustainable Green Print business and we have been certified since 2011.

"There are strict rules to being accredited and our practices are aimed at reducing the effects on the environment.

"We were the first commercial printers on the North Coast to get the accreditation."

Coaster Kings' state gold awards mean it will now go into the running for PICA national recognition next May.
