Twilight author calls Fifty Shades of Grey 'smutty'

TWILIGHT author Stephenie Meyer has admitted she has never read E.L James' Fifty Shades of Grey, saying that it is too "smutty" for her taste.

The erotic novel by E.L James that charts the sexual relationship between a young girl and a sadist was originally inspired by fan fiction written about the Twilight series.

When asked if she had read Fifty Shades of Grey in an interview in The Guardian, Meyer said: "It's so not my genre. Erotica is not something I read. I don't even read romance…It's too smutty.

"There's a reason my books have a lot of innocence. That's the sort of world I live in."

In the Twilight series there is minimal sex in the four Young Adult fiction books, which follow the relationship between teenage girl Bella Swan and her vampire boyfriend Edward Cullen.

When sex is written about, it is only after the couple have consummated their marriage.

Critics have accused the book of being "abstinence porn", a form of propaganda to convince teenagers of the need for sexual purity because of its lack of pre-marital sex.

Meyer said she never intended the books to have such a message but that some of it reflects her personal experience.

Meyer, a practising Mormon, married her husband aged 21 having known him since the age of 4.

"What I think says true love is different than what a lot of other people do, so it's just what my subconscious puts out there," she said.

"To me, true love is that you would hurt yourself before you would hurt your partner, you would do anything to make them happy, even at your own expense, there's nothing selfish about true love," she added.
