Sunshine makes welcome return

THE finest day on the weather front since the start of the holiday period lured people to the great outdoors all over the region today.

A crystal blue sky and temperatures hovering around the 30 degree mark ensured television sets, computers and video game consols were turned off as folk of all ages took advantage of the fine weather.

Parks were packed with picnickers, rivers were awash with water craft of all shapes and sizes, beachgoers had to search for space to spread their towels and beachside restaurants did a roaring trade all along the coastal strip.

Cosy country pubs reported good trade as locals and travellers cruised the hinterland to take in the magnificent scenery and the opportunity to sample some delicious country fare.

The car park at the base of Mt Warning was chock-a-block full of vehicles as hikers took advantage of the "see forever" day to climb to the top of the mountain and take in the glorious views.

Jack Evans Boat Harbour at Tweed Heads was one of the most popular places with families having picnics, kiddies building sandcastles on the beach or paddling in the shallows and other "big kids" getting exercise aboard Big Trev's hire water craft.

Big Trev, who has been operating his water craft and bike hire business at Jack Evans Boat Harbour for 10 years, says he was having his best day for two summers.

"Business has really picked up thanks to this wonderful weather - it really is our first taste of summer," Big Trev said.

"This really is the perfect place for the entire family - a very safe swimming area with no rips or currents, shaded areas in the park to relax or have a picnic and of course Big Trev is here to help everyone who wants to get out and play on the water."
