Tweed-Byron lands interdistrict bowls hat-trick

TWEED Byron District has taken top honours in the interdistrict lawn bowls competition for the third consecutive year.

The Tweed Byron women got the better of their counterparts from the Clarence River, Mid North Coast and Northern Rivers districts in the event played at Park Beach Bowling Club last Thursday and Friday.

Tweed Byron began its title defence with a win over Northern Rivers in the first round. Tweed Byron finished with seven rink wins and a margin of +32. In round two Tweed Byron continued to impress, downing Clarence River with 7.5 rink wins (+52).

In the third round Tweed Byron took on Mid North Coast who, with 9.5 rink wins and a margin of +47, also remained in contention for the title.

Tweed Byron needed just three rink wins to claim the shield but it was forced to fight all the way as Mid North Coast dug in.

With two rink wins in its keeping, the last Tweed Byron team on the greens held a two-shot lead heading into the final end.

Mid North Coast clawed back one shot but it was not enough, with Tweed Byron hanging on to win by one.

The win secured Tweed Byron a third consecutive District Shield.
