TV ratings battle heats up: The Voice tops cooking and reno

THE premiere of the fifth season of The Voice has delivered a much-needed ratings win for Channel 9.

The first episode of blind auditions of the reality singing show was the most-watched program last night, attracting 1.4 million viewers across the five metropolitan cities.

It comfortably beat the premiere of the eighth season of Channel 10's cooking show MasterChef, which was the fourth most watched show drawing 1.012 million metro viewers.

It's a much-need win for Nine, which failed to put up a worthy challenger to Seven's recent ratings juggernaut My Kitchen Rules.

The first whole house reveal of Seven's renovation show House Rules was the sixth most watched show of the night with 830,000 metro viewers.

The fifth season of The Voice sees former X Factor Australia judge Ronan Keating replace Ricky Martin. The new line-up of coaches opened last night's show with a performance of Adele's hit song Hello.

Keating is still finding his feet on the new format. He's yet to land a singer for his team, while Delta and Jessie J have one singer each . The Madden brothers were the most successful, securing three singers in the first night.

The Voice's blind auditions and MasterChef's judges auditions both continue tonight at 7.30pm.
