Turnbull calls for restraint in South China Sea

PRIME Minister Malcolm Turnbull has called for restraint in the dispute over the South China Sea after a warning from Beijing.

State-run newspaper China Daily cautioned Australia it would face financial consequences if it opposed China's claim over the trade route.

Speaking to reporters in Beijing yesterday, Mr Turnbull urged claimants to settle disputes "peacefully and in accordance with international law".
