Turkeys reserves bomb the Bombers at Evans Head
ON A COLD and windy Saturday the Commercial Hotel Kyogle Turkeys travelled to Evans Head to take on the Bombers on their home turf.
The Kyogle Soul Pattinson Chemist and Brown and Hurley under-18 side seemed somewhat out of sorts and their game showed just that.
The side just couldn't seem to get their act in to gear as they had in other games this season and participated in an extremely scrappy affair.
Despite winning the game 18-16 coach Andrew Pederson was far from happy with their performance. One player who did show up was Nathan Farragher whose strong running and determined defence made him a standout in an otherwise ordinary game of rugby league.
The Stuart Brother Butchers and Kyogle Bowling Club reserve grade side were a different proposition when they defeated the Bombers 48-10 and were totally dominant from the opening bell.
Best on the park were Phil Bundock, Jacob Skinner, Leslie Fuller and youngster Heydon Goodwin who backed up from the under-18s.
Goodwin is proving to be a rapidly maturing footballer and is surely destined for bigger things. His strong, hard running and solid tackling were a delight to watch and coach Wayne Lollback must have been very impressed with his performance.
The Kyogle Real Estate and Dave's Bakehouse A-grade side were involved in a game that can only be described as an arm wrestle.
At various stages the score was tied or fluctuated with only two or four points between the sides.
In a game that could have gone either way, the Turkeys finished up at full time only two points down in a very entertaining performance. Some baffling decisions by the on-field official that many spectators found hard to fathom had both sides aggrieved at times.
Very good performances by Marshall Leisha, Don Walker, Dillon Keys (who backed up from reserve grade) and the Nicholson brothers Sam and Kale were a feature of the Kyogle side. Full time score of 24-26 to Evans Head was indicative of the closeness of the game.
Next week the Turkeys are at home to Casino.
