Turf club issue a mystery

THE man appointed to the position of Lismore Turf Club secretary-manager only a few months ago, John Menzel, is believedto no longer be in the role.

His apparent departure remains something of a mystery and club chairman Ron Marriott yesterday wasn't about to shed any light on the matter.

"No comment," was all he would say when contacted by The Northern Star.

The development in local racing was all the talk at the Ballina Boxing Day meeting on Monday with any number of rumours circulating about the circumstances.

Menzel was appointed in September to replace Michael Timbrell, who left to take up a position with the St Vincent de Paul Society.

Menzel arrived in Lismore from Western Australia in October, having spent time at the Pinjarra and Narrogin clubs.

The Northern Star tried to contact him for comment yesterday but was unsuccessful.
