Turf club is award finalist

ON THE eve of Australia’s greatest race, the Lismore Turf Club has received a huge vote of confidence from Racing NSW.

The club is celebrating its nomination in the Country Awards for Excellence as a finalist in the Best Supporting TAB Race Club.

Turf club secretary-manager Michael Timbrell was over the moon and said it was always great to be recognised.

“This is probably the highest award we’re eligible for,” he said.

“We have six TAB meetings a year and we try to put together the best race meetings we can.

“We’re getting great revenue from our meetings and we also have a great cup day with $60,000 prizemoney.

“We had 6000 through the gate last year – what we get through the gate is as good as any of our peers.

“We have nearly 400 members, which is big – it puts us in the top five in NSW country racing.

“But we also have great support from the community and our sponsors who support us year in and year out. The club’s future is looking bright.

“We’ve been improving the stables and I’d love to get another trainer over here. We’ve improved security and trainers can be secure in their own little complex now.”

Mr Timbrell’s tip for today’s big race is the Bart Cummings horse Viewed.
