Trump's own email scandal may destroy his chances, too

US SENATE Democratic leader Harry Reid has accused the FBI of engaging in a double standard when it comes to releasing information about Hillary Clinton.

He claims the FBI is sitting on "explosive information" about Donald Trump but has failed to publish it, reports news.com.au.

The senator has written a letter to FBI director James Comey after the director decided to publicise the agency's reopening of the investigation into Clinton's email server.

"The double standard established by your actions is clear," he said in the letter.

"In my communications with you and other top officials in the national security community, it has become clear that you possess explosive information about close ties and co-ordination between Donald Trump, his top advisers, and the Russian government - a foreign interest openly hostile to the United States, which Trump praises at every opportunity.

"The public has a right to know this information. I wrote to you months ago calling for this information to be released to the public.

"There is no danger to American interests from releasing it. And yet, you continue to resist calls to inform the public of this critical information.

"By contrast, as soon as you came into possession of the slightest innuendo related to Secretary Clinton, you rushed to publicise it in the most negative light possible."

Reid went on further to suggest that Comey's actions were so partisan they may have broken the law.

Clinton's clear lead in the polls was almost entirely destroyed by the FBI's announcement which came just two weeks before US citizens head to the ballot box.
