A B-DOUBLE truck carrying medical supplies caught fire and exploded at around 6am on the Pacific Highway at Tabbimoble this morning.

All north bound lanes of the highway were blocked as Evans Head Fire Brigade and Woodburn Rural Fire Service contained the blaze.

"A truck driver travelling north noticed a fire had started in the axle of the A-trailer of his truck so he pulled over at the rest area," Evans Head Fire Brigade captain Ralph Lohse said.

"He tried to pour water over the fire but that caused an explosion.

"He was then quick enough to disconnect the B-trailer and get the A-trailer out of the way."

When the fire brigade turned up one of the tyres from the truck was burning in the middle of the highway.

Evans Head ambulance arrived on the scene to check the driver who had stomach pains possibly as a result of the explosion.

Emergency services used breathing apparatuses and foam to distinguish the fire and one lane was re-opened an hour after the incident.
