Trojans win minor semi-final in torrid tussle with Ballina
IT was far from pretty but Lennox Head got the job done with a 16-7 win against Ballina in the Far North Coast Rugby Union minor semi-final at Quays Reserve, Ballina on Sunday night.
The Trojans spent what seemed like eternity camped on their own tryline in the second half when they were up 9-0.
Hooker Jamie Tredinnick was yellow carded for a head high tackle before eventually being sent off with a second yellow for an infringement at the ruck.
Flanker Brock Jensen also spent time off the field in the second half while his side scrambled to hold Ballina out.
In the end the Seahorses were awarded a penalty try after the Trojans gave away a string of penalties on their line.
Things turned comical from there when Lennox five-eighth Adam Gordon tried to chase Ballina front-rower Adam Thomas back to the halfway line after a scuffle broke out.
Gordon took exception to something after the try was awarded and his actions held up the game for a further five minutes as referee Mick Melino spoke to Lennox Head captain Benn Wright.
They responded soon after when centre Martin McNamara scored a try off a set move from a scrum.
"It was a great defensive effort; we've been pretty good there all year," Lennox Head coach Jason McCombie said.
"It was actually that dark in the second half that I really couldn't even see what was going on out there.
"It's a week to week thing for us now and we've got another game to get ready for."
McCombie named halfback Scott Cardow, flanker Hamish Holbrook and McNamara as his best.
Ballina was best served by flankers Andrew Burke, George Scott and No 8 Sean Grace.
In other games, Ballina had to overcome all the odds to snatch a 20-18 win against Grafton in the reserve grade semi-final.
They were hammered from the opening whistle in the penalty count and even had two tries that were already awarded called back and be disallowed on touch judges reports.
