Trojans made to work in the mire

WHAT was supposed to be a rugby union game on Saturday soon turned into ‘mud-wrestling’ with a ball in FNC rugby union, thanks to wet and soggy conditions at Quays Reserve, Ballina.

While Lennox Head won the game 10-6 over Ballina, Trojans coach Paul Jeffrey wasn’t completely happy with his team’s play.

“It wasn’t a good game; there were more negatives than positives and the conditions were the major factor,” he said.

“We were too complacent, very lethargic, and just never got out of second gear.

“We were way too casual with what we did.”

It seemed to be all the little mishaps which kept the Trojans down to just a narrow lead against the Seahorses.

“It was a game that could have been won four tries to one,” Jeffrey said.

But that didn’t mean the Seahorses were just there for a cuppa and a chat.

“Ballina were up for the game, and really wanted to knock us off,” Jeffrey said.

“But there were mistakes on both sides, and we created more opportunities than our opposition did.

“It was just a game where I was hoping to come home with the win.

“When we turned up to the ground I just closed my eyes and thought, ‘This is going to be a nightmare’. Hopefully Grafton will be a dry field next week.”

Jeffrey singled out three key performers for praise – Mathew Barnes, Sam Stewart and Matthew Liddle.
