TRIXIE recently had the fight of her life and won, but only due to a great deal of luck.

The toy pomeranian almost lost her life to a red belly black snake.

She had been trying to protect her family from the snake when she was attacked.

The little heroine managed to kill the serpent but not without consequences.

Her owner, Anne-Marie Randall of Bolcaro Rd, said her dog had a lucky escape.

"We came home and she was showing paralysis tick-like symptoms," Ms Randall said.

"We took her to the vet and the bloods showed she had been bitten by an eastern brown or red belly black.

"The vet said she had been bitten between three and five times. It was touch and go."

It has been a long road back to recovery but Trixie is getting back to her old self.

"She was given anti-venom and large doses of antibiotics and fluids," Ms Randall said.

"She is doing really well now and she's a fighter, that's for sure."

Ms Randall wants everyone to stay extra vigilant with their pets.

"Just keep an eye out and supervise your pets," she said.

"Dogs will let you know if something is around and they are protective so you really need to be watching them."

Snake handler Codey Rowe, of Reptile Removals Gympie, said many snakes had been caught during the hot weather.

"We have had a number of call-outs lately," he said.

"Most call-outs have been for red belly blacks as well as carpet snakes and eastern browns.

"Red belly blacks are not as aggressive as some snakes but if you provoke them they will attack, so be cautious."

And there is one golden rule to be remembered.

"If you see a snake stay away and call a professional to remove it," Mr Rowe said.
