Tributes flow for community icon Helen Wynd

TRIBUTES have flowed from across the Northern Rivers and beyond following the tragic death of Lismore community stalwart Helen Wynd on Monday.

Ms Wynd, a Red Cross volunteer of more than 70 years, died at Lismore Base Hospital after she was hit by a car in Cambridge Dr at Goonellabah when she was crossing the road after getting off a bus.

Readers took to The Northern Star’s Facebook page to share their kind words about the well-known 92-year-old.

Lyn Clements wrote: “Oh dear, so very sorry to see the community has lost a lady who has worked tirelessly for so many organisations. RIP Helen.”

Melissa Eakin posted: “So sad she won’t be calling in any more. What a lady xx.”

“Very sad news indeed, such a kind and caring lady,” Bruce John Ware posted.

Caz Greene wrote: “So very sad. She was clearly a lady who had spent her life helping others.”

“I will miss our chats and waves,” posted Lynda Jones. “RIP. An angel taken too soon.”

Tessa Hutchison wrote: “My thoughts go out to the family at this sad time. May she be forever remembered fondly. RIP Helen.”

“Our community is so much poorer with the loss of this beautiful, caring hard-working lady,” posted Tania Harvey.

Joan Sheaffe wrote: “Helen was a very special lady, has helped other people all her life, will be sorely missed.”

Lismore mayor Jenny Dowell paid tribute to Ms Wynd at the city’s Australia Day celebrations on Tuesday.

Member for Lismore Thomas George penned a moving tribute to Ms Wynd, a woman he had known for many years.

Funeral arrangements for Ms Wynd will be listed in the funeral notices in Saturday’s Northern Star.
