Triathletes quick off mark at Byron competition

ABOUT 450 competitors have already registered for the 2014 Byron Bay triathlon.

The event usually reaches capacity with 1600 expected to make it one of the biggest sporting events of the year on the Byron Bay calendar.

"A lot of people leave it to the last minute but sometimes it fills up quickly," event manager Sebastian Krantz said.

"As long as we don't reach capacity we'll leave it open until the week before.

"We still have five months to go but we expect it to be another huge event."

A new sprint distance race has been added to the 2014 race.

It will be held over two days on May 10 and 11 with most of the competition events on the Saturday.

The feature race is the individual 1.5km swim, 40km bike ride and 10km run and team events.

It is usually the last race of the season on the NSW and Queensland calendar.

Smaller races for kids from the ages of 7-15 years will also be held.

It finishes on Sunday with the heart starter sprint race and Mother's Day family walk and fun run.
