Trials set up Victorians for Doomben Cup

Victorian gallopers Our Ivanhowe and Noble Protector will head to Brisbane for the $650,000 Doomben Cup (2000m) on May 21 after impressive trials at Cranbourne.

Our Ivanhowe (pictured) hasn't raced since finishing last behind Preferment in the Group One BMW (2400m) at Randwick on March 26, but showed he had retained his fitness by racing wide throughout before holding off Noble Protector in a 1550m trial on a heavy track.

Jockey Daniel Moor said the former UK galloper had appreciated the wet ground and had been "good through the line" despite racing wide.

Noble Protector is coming off a last-start third to Azkadellia in the Group One Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on April 9, and trainer Robert Smerdon said he had no fears about the mare stepping up to the 2000m.

"Her form in the UK is over 2400m, so the 2000m shouldn't hold any fears for her," Smerdon said.
