John Shelton fined $5000 by Racing NSW

GRAFTON trainer John Shelton has been fined after his star gelding Lucky Meteor tested positive to a prohibited substance.

Racing NSW stewards conducted an inquiry on Friday into the finding of Meloxicam in a blood sample collected from the racehorse prior to it running ninth in the Benchmark 85 Handicap (1000m) at the Australian Turf Club race meeting at Royal Randwick Racecourse on Saturday, August 22.

Evidence was taken from Shelton, Racing NSW senior official veterinarian Dr Craig Suann and Australian Racing Forensic Laboratory science manager Adam Cawley. According to a Racing NSW statement released yesterday, Shelton pleaded guilty to a charge that he did cause to be administered the prohibited substance Meloxicam detected in a blood sample taken from Lucky Meteor prior to the race.

Lucky Meteor was disqualified and Shelton fined $5000.

Meloxicam is an non- steroidal anti-inflammatory drug understood to be in common use by racehorse trainers but must not be detected in a horse's system on race day.

Lucky Meteor was named Clarence River Jockey Club's Horse of the Year after a 2014/15 season which included five wins.

August 22 was the five- year-old's first start from a spell. He has since had three unplaced runs at Doomben.

Shelton declined to comment to The Daily Examiner.
