Trade training chance for schools
PAGE MP Janelle Saffin is encouraging secondary schools in Page that are not part of the Trade Training Centre in schools program to apply for funding under the next round opening next month.
Round Five , worth $400 million, will be split into two phases of $200 million. Phase 1 will open on November 30, 2012 and Phase 2 will open in August 2013.
Ms Saffin said this is a fantastic opportunity for local schools to benefit from industry-standard trade training infrastructure and equipment.
"The Australian Government introduced the program in 2008 and has already invested more than $16.7 million in Trade Training Centres in schools in Page," she said.
"I have visited the fantastic new hospitality and trade workshop facilities at schools in the Lismore Community Trade Training Centre, which includes facilities at Kadina, Lismore and Richmond River High Schools, and the Richmond Ranges Trade Training Centre which has facilities at Kyogle and Casino High Schools and Bonalbo Central School.
"The teachers and students have told me just how much they appreciate the new facilities, and how valuable it is to have training and experience using industry-standard equipment in purpose-built work areas.
"And next year new Trade Training Centres will be ready for students at Woodenbong Central School, Emmanuel Anglican College in Ballina, St Johns College Woodlawn and St Mary's High School Casino.
"TTCs play an important role in creating a link between schools, students, industry and local businesses.
"The program will help support students to stay in school and get a qualification as well as address skills shortages in traditional trades and other occupations."
The top five areas of enrolment in TTCs for 2011 were:
- Mechanical and industrial engineering and technology,
- Food and hospitality,
- Automotive engineering and technology,
"I encourage interested schools to contact their Education Authority for further information on proposals for Round Five," she said.
"The continued support by schools, education authorities, local communities and local industry demonstrates how effective strong partnership arrangements can be in delivering trade training facilities to students, so that they can get the best possible start in their chosen careers."
