Tourists support ‘best' beach

IT'S one of Australia's most famous destinations but travellers believe Byron Bay beach is not as good as Burleigh Heads.

The Bay came in second on a list of Australia's best beaches on the world's largest travel site, TripAdvisor.

The TripAdvisor Traveller's Choice Awards are based on ratings from millions of travel reviewers.

Burleigh Heads took out the 2012 award, followed by Byron Bay, Coolangatta, Broome and Noosa.

Traveller Victoria Gikling, 23, of Norway said she thought Byron Bay should have won.

"It should definitely be Byron Bay because the beach is so clean and there are lots of young people here," Ms Gikling said.

Ms Gikling and her friends have visited two other iconic Australian beaches, Manly in Sydney and St Kilda beach in Melbourne.

"I've got nothing against St Kilda but this is better," Ms Gikling said with a smile.

Her friend Mina Knudsen, 22, of Norway said it's the view and the white sand that makes Byron Bay special.

"If you go to the beach in Norway you would never see this long white beach," Ms Knudsen said.

"I'm so sad to be going home; we'll definitely come back."
