Tough, but there are jobs out there

GRAFTON may be a challenging market for employment but if you want to work and are willing to get out there, jobs are available.

That was the message from Nortec employment consultant Ken Gerke who stopped by the Espana Motel in South Grafton on Monday to check on Bronwyn Parsons who started working there about a month ago. Ms Parsons is one of 736 jobseekers Nortec has placed into employment during its '1000 jobs in 100 days' campaign.

The campaign is more than two-thirds of the way through and last week (day 61) it had placed more than 700 people into sustainable employment from Coffs to Tweed, meaning it was beating its target by 56 positions. Hospitality has been identified as one of the sectors in which it's difficult to fill roles.

Ms Parsons moved to Grafton recently and after having a family had been out of work for some years.

"She was worried about picking up work as there's not a lot here and her confidence was low," Mr Gerke said.

"We got her to study a Cert II in retail to get her confidence back up."

Co-owner of Espana Motel Angela Michaliczak has run the establishment with her husband for 15 years.

They employ three casual cleaners and one casual wait staff.

"The cleaners are often on call and Bronwyn is always willing to come in and work, which is a really good sign," she said.

Keep up with the progress of the Nortec jobs campaign in future editions.
