Total fire ban declared for Northern Rivers region

A total fire ban is in force for the Northern Rivers today with severe fire conditions expected.

Northern Rivers Rural Fire Service Superintendent Michael Brett said predicted weather conditions warranted the ban.

"There is a front that is going to bring very high temperatures and strong north-westerly winds," he said.

"Based on the current fuel loading and where we are in the season the country is primed and ready to burn."

Supt Brett said gas or electric barbeques were the only forms of fire permitted today.

He said all fire permits were cancelled due to the total fire ban.

"Strong north-westerly winds combined with high temperature and low humidity pushes the fire warning up into the severe category, which enacts the total fire ban requirement."
