TOP MARKS: Townsville uni among best in world

JAMES Cook University has been ranked as one of the world's top universities.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) has been released by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy and it puts JCU in the top 2 per cent group of universities worldwide.

ARWU compares more than 1800 universities across the world but only data for the top 1000 is published.

JCU, which was placed in the top 301-400 universities, has been included inside the world's top 400 since 2010.

JCU Vice Chancellor Professor Sandra Harding (pictured) said that the ranking was a significant achievement for the university and a testament to the work of JCU's researchers.

"JCU delivers groundbreaking, internationally recognised research, and this ranking confirms we perform very strongly when compared to the world's largest, most successful universities," Prof Harding said.

"This ranking reflects the very high standard of research undertaken by the university and bolsters our standing as a world-class research university."

The Academic Ranking of World Universities is considered one of the most prestigious and authoritative global university rankings.

Member for Townsville Scott Stewart said JCU's high ranking showed that North Queensland had students and academics who were respected internationally. "We have high-calibre students who come here to North Queensland to study, and we have high-calibre researchers as well," he said.

"We're attracting a lot of people to study here, and the results of this latest ranking will help bring more students and researchers to JCU.

"I'm a former high school principal myself and I know how important it is to have a strong university in a regional area such as ours.

"High school students know they can get a world-class tertiary education right here in Townsville. It's as good as any in the world."

ARWU used six objective indicators to rank world universities, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel prizes and Fields medals, the number of highly cited researchers selected by Clarivate Analytics, number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science, number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index - Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index, and per capita performance of a university.

Harvard University took out top spot in this year's rankings, followed by Stanford University in second.

Nine of the top 10 universities were from the US according to the rankings, with the other being Cambridge University in the UK.
