Top award for stellar career
LOCAL lifeguard Scott McCartney says being named Lifeguard of the Year is a ‘huge achievement' and one of the highlights of his lifesaving career.
The 24-year-old, who is a regular on our local beaches throughout the summer season, received the top honour at the NSW Surf Life Saving Awards of Excellence in Sydney at the weekend.
The title recognises Lifeguard Service employees who have made an outstanding contribution to the delivery and development of life guarding in NSW.
Scott has been involved in surf lifesaving since he was eight and has worked as Lifeguard Co-ordinator for the region from Tweed to Nambucca for the past 18 months.
Lifeguard manager for NSW Murray Copas said Scott had proven himself an outstanding lifeguard over many years.
He has worked for the Australian Lifeguard service for more than seven years and performed numerous major rescues and attended serious incidents and coastal emergencies.
“With a big area to cover, Scott does a fantastic job ensuring the beach safety services provided by councils are first class,” he said.
Mr McCartney said he loved his job: “It's such a great environment to work in, the people involved are all great, and in the end you're there to help other people.”
