WHEN Wendy Wieck heard a knock in the middle of the night she had no idea the house next door was fully ablaze.

The Hume St property was well-alight when fire crews arrived about 1.40am on Saturday.

Neighbours reported the property was a non-occupied residence and empty at the time of the fire.

"I had no idea until I saw the flames," Ms Wieck said.

WHAT'S ONLINE TODAY:

"I was amazed at how 'on fire' the place was. Especially in the middle of town and right next door."

"There was no wind so the flames were rising straight up and not threatening our house.

"The firies were great. They had it under control."

Ms Wieck said she knew the previous owners of the home who had since sold the property.

"No-one lives there now," she said.

A Queensland Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said five crews responded to the fire and spent the early hours of the morning fighting the blaze.

"We were unable to enter the structure at any level as it was too dangerous to enter," she said.

"The fire was well involved in the centre of the timber structure."

"It was under control within an hour and extinguished by 4.30am.

"The last crew left the scene at 9am."

QFRS has conducted an investigation into the incident.

No information about the cause of the fire was available.
