Young mother rebuilding after fire in home

A YOUNG Toowoomba mother is facing the daunting task of rebuilding her life and possessions after a fire ravaged her Rangeville home last week.

Jessica Phillips and her four children fled the burning downstairs of her South St property with little more than the clothes on their back about 6pm on Thursday.

Ms Phillips said she had been in the process of moving out and had stored the majority of her and her four children's possessions in the downstairs car port.

After making sure her son Konna, 11, and daughters Seianna, 8, Indianna, 6, and Maharlia, 2, were out of the home and safe with a neighbour, Ms Phillips flagged down a passing motorist and called 000 before picking up a garden hose with another nearby resident.

"I got the house back on Saturday but they said it was too badly burned to know how it started," Ms Phillips said.

"I've lost just about everything."

Ms Phillips signed a new lease on a home yesterday and hopes to move in in the coming days.

What items survived the fire upstairs are heavily smoke damaged including her children's mattresses and their clothes.

While she is salvaging what she can, including stripping back furniture and repainting it, Ms Phillips said she had been buoyed by the support from the wider community.

Donation points have been set up across the road for bulky goods, but those wanting to contribute to Ms Phillips and her children should email news@thechronicle.com.au and the information will be passed on.
