Tommy Emmanuel's moving tribute to his late brother Phil

GUITAR legend Phil Emmanuel, who died suddenly last week aged 65, has been remembered as one of Australia's greatest guitarist.

Phil, who use to live at Sawtell, and who's children have grown up on the Coffs Coast died from a sudden asthma attack at Parkes on Thursday night.

Phil was reportedly staying with his brother Darcy at the time and had several shows booked, including a performance at the Cootamundra Hotel.

"On behalf of the family, it is with great sadness that I announce the passing of our much loved brother, Philip Ernest Emmanuel," Darcy said.

Phil's famed brother Tommy Emmanuel, who is currently on tour in London, paid tribute to his older brother.

Their sister Virginia Grace, died just weeks ago, aged 69, on April 14.

"I won't be able to look into those green eyes again or hear that wicked laugh," Tommy Emmanuel said.

"He taught me so much right from the start, showed me how to recognise song keys, chords, harmonies, how to get a sound that worked, how to stay out of the way on stage and when to step forward when I had something to say, musically or otherwise.

"We spent so many years travelling, playing shows, setting up, packing up, sleeping in little cheap motels and pubs, all because we loved to entertain people and have fun.

"We shared everything, and he taught me about kindness, giving, listening, how to love people as they are.

"He was a walking contradiction, and a dreamer, but mostly, a loving kind, concerned brother.

"We are all devastated."

Phil worked as a professional musician since he was nine years old.

He started in the family band: "The Emmanuel Quartet", which also went by the names to "The Midget Surfaries" and "The Trailblazers".

Phil played lead and Tommy played rhythm guitar, along with their brother Chris on drums and their sister Virginia on slide guitar.

The Emmanuel siblings earned the family's sole income for several years in the 1960s.

Phil is survived by his wife Amanda and his children Jessie Maree, Jamie Lee, Georgia Dee and Marshall Travis.

Arrangements for his funeral are yet to be announced.
