Tomic downs Matosevic and proves he could be top player

HE may currently sit 15 places below Marinko Matosevic on the world rankings, but Bernard Tomic showed he is more than capable of being Australia's No.1 player yesterday.

The 20-year-old cruised into the second round of the Sydney International by easily defeating his compatriot Matosevic at the Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre.

Tomic took just 73 minutes overcome the world No.49, 6-3 6-4, to set up a clash with Germany's Florian Mayer, who beat Joao Sousa, of Portugal, 6-1 6-2.

In other results, fellow Aussie John Millman recorded a surprise 6-3 6-4 win over Spanish veteran Tommy Robredo, while Svetlana Kuznetsova fought back to beat former world No.1 Caroline Wozniacki 7-6 1-6 6-2 in the women's draw.
